Koi - Cyprinus Carpio
One of fish keepers favorite fish is the Koi. This is a fun add for any fish tank because of thier variety of colors and sizes. Koi Can can live up to 50 years! Wow! If you plan on keeping the your Koi for a while you should keep in mind that you may need a larger aquarium. These fish grow quite fast and tend to be in the pond community. But hey if you have the cash it’s no problem to get a larger fish tank to house your Koi. Koi learn to identify their fish keepers, they could be trained to take food straight from the hand. Koi usually keep to themselves as a peaceful fish but are known to nip at the little fishes…
They usually average 24″- 36″ in size. Koi are Omnivores. They eat both plant and animals like prepared and live foods. You can toss Fish Flakes or Pellets to feed your Koi. Wheat Germ pellets, chopped or frozen spinach, spirulina a good source of food for your Koi, don’t be shy to mix it up a little with the food. Freeze-Dried Bloodworms, tubifex worms and other small worms, mosquito larvae and daphnia are the specialty foods for your Barb. Koi are BIG eaters so be prepared to feed them more than most. If you have Koi swimming about in your outdoor pond keep in mind that when the water is lower than 45 degrees they eat less.
Other fish to pair your Koi with would be similar pond or large aquarium fish like the Comet Goldfish. A fish tank of 50 Gallons is highly recommended because of the size they grow in such a short period of time. Koi also need cooler water between 65-75 Degrees. At least three feet of depth is great too. If the water is too shallow then it increases the chances your fish will over heat with the water temperture easily changing temp.
